The Magic of Rainbows

A rainbow is a multi-colored arc which is formed in the sky when sunlight strikes water droplets. It is not an object located at a specific distance; rather, it is an optical illusion that depends on where you are standing and where the sun is.

How it Works

To see a rainbow, you need two things: sunlight and moisture (like rain or mist). The process happens in three main steps inside a raindrop:

1. Refraction
As sunlight enters a raindrop, it slows down and bends. This is called refraction.
2. Reflection
The light hits the back of the droplet and reflects (bounces) forward again.
3. Dispersion
As the light leaves the droplet, it bends again. Because different colors bend at different angles, the white light separates into its component colors.
